Why Perinatal Nutrition Matters For Your Healthy Pregnancy Diet Plan?

During pregnancy, a woman’s body goes through physiologic changes in every vital system. These changes require different nutrients than a non-pregnant woman and demand altered sources of energy. Honoring proper nutrition during this time is essential not only for a woman’s health during pregnancy, but also for proper fetal development. Every body system in the fetus develops under the nutritional environment provided by mom and how fetal organs develop impacts the health of the baby for life.

The importance of the nutritional status of a woman before and during pregnancy has been proven in multiple medical studies that link improper perinatal nutrition to adverse outcomes in the fetus including birth defects of the spine and brain, premature birth and intrauterine growth restriction (low birth weight). Consequences of this are not just limited to the time surrounding birth. In fact, babies born premature or with low birth weight are at an increased risk to develop many diseases later in life including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and osteoporosis. Additionally, current research efforts are discovering a link between perinatal nutrition and obesity, behavior disorders, and asthma in children.

Barker's Theory Of Fetal Programming

The work of English epidemiologist, Dr. David Barker, and his associates at the University of Southampton has contributed substantially to the field of perinatal nutrition and its effect on fetal development. His pioneering work studying the lifelong impact of early growth and development has ushered in a new field of medicine and a whole new way of promoting health and preventing disease.

Dr. Barker developed the concept of “fetal programming” which describes how a woman’s body composition and diet at the time of conception and during pregnancy have permanent effects on a child that alter lifelong risks for important diseases. Specifically, if a baby is poorly nourished during development in the womb, organ development (heart, kidney, bone, brain) will be slowed or altered. Improper organ development during this time impedes proper organ function and makes them vulnerable to chronic diseases including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, and osteoporosis.

The Barker Foundation is committed to ending chronic disease by informing proper perinatal nutrition.
